These two concepts – sustainable development and global citizenship – have both come to prominence in the last few years. Both have proved to be controversial. Development is simple to understand, but what is sustainable development? Citizenship would seem to be a legal term applied to membership of a country, so what does global citizenship entail?
This section tries to explain what these terms mean.

Both concepts cover a range of different issues and there are no satisfactory one sentence definitions of either. Both concepts, however, link together in their focus on how we can all live together on this planet in ways which allow for both individual freedom and collective responsibility.

The approach of this resource to Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship is that these two aspects are not separable, that to tackle one without being aware of the other is to court failure, and many of the sites linked to these web pages demonstrate this.
