Newport: So, Newport City Council is looking to change the speed limit back to 30mph on 16 roads. This comes after a big public consultation where over 3,500 folks shared their thoughts.

Residents had a lot to say, suggesting 335 roads for either a 30mph limit or to keep at 20mph. But, most of those roads didn’t meet the strict rules set by the Welsh Government.

It looks like the council’s cabinet will likely agree to this plan at a meeting later in January. The roads on the list include parts of Caerphilly Road, Bassaleg Road, and a few others.

Back in September 2023, the Welsh Government changed the default speed limit to 20mph, which stirred up quite a bit of debate. This led to a new transport secretary, Ken Skates, asking for public input on which roads should go back to 30mph.

Now, Newport City Council has to publish a Traffic Regulation Order for each road, giving the public another chance to weigh in. They even got some funding to help cover the costs of this work.
