A guided visualisation, or fantasy, is a very powerful way of helping students and children develop feelings of being ‘a part of’ the natural world, and to see that other creatures that share the world with us are important in the whole web of life. Guided fantasies are excellent ways of helping students and children develop their emotional engagement with topics and promote deeper understanding of the problems facing the natural world. Such activities tap into children’s imaginations and work at a deeper level of understanding.
There are many fantasies that can be used to promote ESDGC. In the Ocean World activity we suggest two fantasies, both of which can be used with a wide age range. One is designed to help participants understand the beauty of the natural world and feel the wonder and awe of the oceans. The second takes participants back to their imagined place of beauty and this time experience some of the environmental problems facing the oceans and the marine wildlife.
It is important for students to actually experience the fantasy, as if they were pupils, to really appreciate its power as a learning tool.
Such fantasies work better if accompanied by appropriate
music.
Examples:
1. OCEAN WORLD
You will need:
Ocean
World Instructions
Ocean
World 1
Ocean
World 2
Appropriate music to accompany each fantasy
2. IF
THE EARTH WERE ONLY A FEW FEET IN DIAMETER
This is also suggested as a fantasy activity. It is
a powerful way of helping participants get a sense of
the wonder of our planet and promotes the kind of caring
attitudes which are needed if we are to change the attitudes
and behaviour responsible for our current environmental
problems.
