  • to introduce a topical environmental issue
  • to encourage research and critical reflection on an environmental issue
  • to be aware that there are positive and negative sides to most issues.

You will need:
Acid Rain cards
Activity Sheet 1C

You will need:
1 set of Dam cards

Work in groups of four.

TASK 1
You will have been given a set of cards: deal them out between you, and taking it turns to read them sort the cards into two piles like this:

Pile 1
Arguments in favour of big dams

Pile 2
Arguments against big dams

TASK 2
Look again at the cards in Pile l and make a list of the key arguments in favour of dams.

Then look at the cards in Pile 2 and make a list of the key arguments against big dams.

TASK 3
Use the Internet to find out about the impact of big dam projects in the rainforests and in China.

In a group discuss whether you have found any new arguments in favour or against the building of big dams.
